an example of textured surfaced with more fluidity to emphasize the real nature of the medium - liquid paint. Much closer attention paid to the various dying times of the different colors so that the proper surface could be achieved. I have always thought raw paint looked almost as good as "ice cream" and wanted to bring that visual element into play with this piece.
this is the painting that started me on my road back to representational imagery, showed it could be fun. I painted it as a straight forward abstract expressionist treatment of the liquid and solid natures of paint - that odd nexus of substance status that lets us use paint to make images. It has many layers and folded solid pieces of preformed paint up to 3 inches thick - took a very long time to dry. When I was done there was Joseph in his coat of many colors dancing in front of my face - this time instead of painting out all recognizable imagery I started laughing because I was doing my "Primordial Boogie Woogie" series and what shows up but the dancing man! Even though I am not religious I know the stories and have liked the story of Joseph who wins against all odds keeping his humor and wit ... even as a immigrant he marries a Royal Princess of Egypt who is beautiful, laughing young woman who chases him. So this painting refused to let me make it something else and became a celebrtion of Joseph ... the Jimi Hendix/Jimmy Morrison/Bob Dylan of his time. In my mind. |
